What’s separating you from the crowd?

I’ve been a student of success for years and I constantly seek to apply what I’ve learned to my own life and business.

The “big question” I’ve always been curious about is what separates those who are successful from those who aren’t. Is it about being clever or super intelligent? Is it about timing? Getting the right support? Having the right education? Being born into the right family? Or even just plain luck?

While you can’t deny that all of these can help, they certainly don’t ensure success. And lots of extremely successful people have personal histories that challenge our ideas of what it takes to succeed in life and business. Steve Jobs dropped out of college after 6 months. Richard Branson struggled with dyslexia but is now one of the richest people in the UK. Oprah Winfrey was born into poverty and grew up wearing potato sacks for clothes. J.K. Rowling battled divorce and depression but her Harry Potter books have sold over 400 million copies. We’ve all heard numerous stories like these and search for a common trait that drove all of them on despite setbacks.

Here’s the big secret:

“You have to act today like the person who has already achieved tomorrow’s goals.”

In other words, you have to get clear as to the person that you need to be and how you are going to show up as this better version of you? You want to be a 6 or 7 figure business owner? You’ll need to behave and embody that person as if you were already that today. Ask yourself: how does this person show up in the world? How do they manage their time? How does he or she make daily decisions? How do they treat customers or clients? That’s how you need to act right now.

This transformation from who you are to the person you need to become sounds simple as a concept but it requires consistent practice over time to reap the benefits. It requires a lot of personal growth and a willingness to change those aspects of yourself that are no longer serving you. But if you don’t change into a better version of you, you’re likely to remain stuck and back where you started (or worse). That’s the reason that 70% of lottery winners end up financially worse off than where they were prior to their big win. They didn’t have the mindset to be successful nor had they overcome the challenges on the way to receiving that wealth. They continue to act from the older version of themselves, make choices from that place and ultimately end up back there.

The first step is to get crystal clear about your goals. Because it’s the goals you set for yourself that define and dictate the extent of the personal growth you’ll need to undergo to achieve them. This personal growth requires that you are willing to change yourself in order to attain, keep and profit from the benefits of success.

The way to jump start the process is to clearly envision and articulate a big bold goal for yourself. Then start immediately to undertake actions that reflect the person who has already achieved them.
