And you know it represents a vital shift in your thinking that will take you to the next level. But what does it really mean to adopt a “CEO mindset”? That’s the question we’ll explore today…
To handle everything that comes their way, successful CEOs harness the electrifying, life-changing power of positive thinking.
What drives a CEO to get out of bed in the morning and willingly walk into a world filled with difficult problems, take charge of those problems and lead others to their solutions? Is it money? Power? Peer recognition? Making a difference? Autonomy? The freedom to control her destiny?
If you’re thinking along those lines, you’re absolutely right!
Those external indicators of success are powerful motivators, but high-achieving CEOs, like successful entrepreneurs are driven by something else. Let’s call it an internal force.
Where does this deep sense of personal freedom, assertiveness and willingness to take the best of what life has to offer come from? And how can we learn to generate and summon these feelings on command? Through the power of positive thinking.
Positive thinking starts with taking personal responsibility for the way you think about the world around you. You can’t control everything in the world, but you can control what you think about the world.
Eleanor Roosevelt alluded to the power of positivity when she said, “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.
Pretty powerful, right?
To create a positive mindset, you must first identify how much of your thinking is negative.
For example, a common statement I hear from my clients is, “I can’t go after that sale because I don’t know what to offer.” This bit of self-defeating, negativity is like rubbing a cracked crystal ball and letting it decide your fate.
The reality is we don’t really know what the other person is looking for because we haven’t asked! We assume they won’t be interested because of our negative past experiences and nagging self-doubt. But often this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Here’s a mindset altering technique you can start using right away to not only counter negative beliefs, but to transform them into positive beliefs:
- First, confront the negative statement head on.
- Next, picture yourself assuming the role of a strong, intelligent, capable CEO, building a business that allows you to enjoy the freedom to work, live and play wherever you want.
- Then, using the same elements and wording of that negative statement, construct an honest, affirming statement about yourself that you can believe. Using our example, it will sound something like, “I have a lot of [beneficial advice, lessons, insights, expertise, etc.] to offer. How can I best use that to add value to this person?”
If turning negative beliefs into positive beliefs seems like a rather simple technique, that’s because it is. Leonardo da Vinci once said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” We’ve got to stop letting our negative mindset in… it really is that simple!
